Biographical history
Daniel Cappon (1921-2002), psychiatrist and educator, was born in England on 6 June 1921. He graduated from the University of London in 1944, and was trained in medicine at St. Mary's Hospital in London. He oversaw a psychiatric hospital and medical division in the Far East from 1945 to 1948, treating repatriated prisoners of war in Burma and India. Cappon emigrated to Canada in 1950 following postgraduate work in psychiatry in the United Kingdom. He was first associate, later professor of psychiatry at the University of Toronto (1950-1969), and joined York University as a professor in the Faculty of Environmental Studies in 1970. He wrote several studies including "Toward understanding homosexuality" (1964), "Eating, loving and dying" (1975), and "Coupling" (1983). Cappon served as an analytical therapist in Toronto since 1950, was a founding member of the McLuhan Institute at the University of Toronto, and served as an architectural consultant on several projects including Expo 67 and the CN Tower. He died in 2002.

Fonds consists of minutes of meetings, correspondence, research notes, and audio-visual material concerning Daniel Cappon's administrative activities as professor at the University of Toronto and his research in psychiatry.

Arranged into the following series:
S 1. Minutes, 1951-1966. Consists of minutes of committee meetings including the University of Toronto, Department of Psychiatry, Board of Teachers, 1951-1963; the Outpatient Department, 1957-1963; as well as material from the fourth year medical class of the department, including class lists, timetables, etc.
S 2. Correspondence and papers, 1951-1970. Includes copies of papers written by Cappon on various topics in psychology, including perception, fantasy and body illness, anorexia nervosa, sexuality, as well as psychological reactions to external stimuli (war, nuclear war, death). In addition, there are research notes, observational data and related material for experiments and studies that Cappon was conducting. The record series also contains correspondence with colleagues, and grant applications to several agencies (National Health, Canadian Defense Research Board, U.S. Office of Naval Research, Ontario Mental Health Foundation, etc).
S 3. Studies, 1950-1970. Contains material including patient files for a study of stuttering; questionnaires, administrative instructions, case histories, clinical notes and data, and control files for a study on Dreams and Death. There is also material for a study on Perception, including graphs, data, questionnaires, tables, work sheets, data organized by subject type (stewardesses, student nurses, male schizophrenics), and related material.
S 4. Audio-visual materials, 1952-1964. Consists of glass plate transparencies, slides (colour and black and white), photographs and films, as well as audio tape reels, phonograph recordings, and dictaphone recordings of patient interviews, discussions, and lectures detailing research results of Cappon's studies in the fields of dreams, perception, morphology of fantasy, and death, the textual details of which are described in S 3 above.
